AVP Says Technology Must Strengthen Human Dignity

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – AVP Says Technology Must Strengthen Human Dignity after members of the party attended a special lecture by Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon focusing on the ethical and moral implications of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological developments.

The event was held at Cas Veneranda, where religious leaders and representatives from various sectors of the community gathered to discuss how technological innovation can continue to advance while preserving human dignity, the common good, and the core values of society.

According to the AVP parliamentary faction, the discussion provided an important opportunity to examine how digital transformation and artificial intelligence should be guided by ethical principles rather than being driven solely by efficiency or economic benefits. The party emphasized that public policies involving emerging technologies should always consider their impact on individuals, families, and communities.

During the lecture, participants reflected on the teachings of Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the social consequences of the Industrial Revolution. The historical document highlighted how technological and economic progress, when not supported by strong ethical foundations, contributed to poor working conditions, exploitation, and child labor. AVP noted that these lessons remain highly relevant as artificial intelligence continues to reshape the way people live, work, and communicate.

The presentation also explored the philosophies of Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas, emphasizing the importance of genuine human relationships built on respect, understanding, and recognition of each person’s inherent dignity. The speakers stressed that technological innovation should never diminish the value of human interaction or reduce people to purely functional or transactional roles.

AVP stated that the principle of the common good should remain central to Aruba’s approach to adopting new technologies. The party believes that without a strong moral foundation, technological progress cannot fully benefit society or contribute to a more inclusive and resilient future.

The parliamentary faction also expressed appreciation to Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon for creating a platform for meaningful dialogue on an issue that is becoming increasingly significant both in Aruba and around the world.

AVP concluded that technology should bring people closer together, improve quality of life, and strengthen communities. The party stressed that true progress is achieved when innovation places human dignity and the common good at the center of every decision.
