During the parliamentary debate on Aruba’s 2026 national budget, AVP Member of Parliament Jennifer Arends-Reyes highlighted that the budget reflects a positive direction, placing the well-being of the population, education, sustainability, and economic growth at the center of government policy.

According to Arends-Reyes, the budget demonstrates confidence in the people of Aruba by prioritizing investments in seniors, children, teachers, and the real economy. She emphasized the importance of creating an Aruba where citizens can look to the future with confidence, while also supporting young professionals and students who are committed to serving their country.

In her address, the MP called for clarity on several key issues, including the maintenance of school infrastructure. She specifically referenced major institutions such as Colegio Arubano and Centro Deportivo di Playa, asking about plans for baseline assessments and ongoing maintenance. She also raised questions about digitalization in education, including the use of digital boards, technology labs, and whether coding programs are being integrated into the school curriculum.

Arends-Reyes further requested clarification on higher education and accreditation, particularly concerning institutions such as the Instituto Pedagogico Arubano (IPA) and the University of Aruba. She also sought detailed explanations regarding phases one and two of salary restructuring within the education sector and asked whether Aruba could consider more favorable treatment for teachers carrying student loan debt from the Netherlands (DUO).

In addition to education, the parliamentarian addressed topics related to tourism, sustainability, and regional tensions. She expressed support for a high-value, low-impact tourism model and called for clearer management and regulation of short-term vacation rentals. She also emphasized the importance of implementing an Aruba Certification Program and protecting nature within the tourism sector.

Concluding her remarks, Arends-Reyes stated that while Aruba faces a challenging global environment, clear planning and decisive action can position the island as a regional leader. She affirmed that the AVP parliamentary faction remains committed to ensuring that every florin spent delivers real benefits to the community.
