AVP Motion Against Gerlien and Futuro Sends a Negative Signal

In a move that surprised many, during the public parliamentary meeting on the LIM Law, the AVP faction leader submitted a motion calling on the AVP–Futuro government to appoint a Minister Plenipotentiary to the Netherlands as soon as possible. The stated goal of the motion is to ensure continuity, proper diplomatic representation, and to reduce risks to Aruba’s interests within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

MEP parliamentarian Xiomara Maduro reacted sharply, calling it embarrassing that a party which is itself part of the governing coalition must introduce a parliamentary motion to pressure its own government to take action on an issue that should be obvious and a top priority—especially since the position of Minister Plenipotentiary is rooted in the Charter of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

According to Maduro, this is not an opposition motion, but rather an internal alarm signal from within AVP directed at its coalition partner Futuro. This raises an obvious question: if AVP is the largest party in the coalition, why was this issue not resolved internally? Why must a governing party use Parliament to send a message to its own Cabinet?

Signs of Poor Coordination Within Government

The situation, Maduro argues, exposes a deeper problem within the current government—namely that it lacks communication, coordination, and joint decision-making. She emphasized that the role of Minister Plenipotentiary is not symbolic. It is a critical position responsible for defending Aruba’s interests within the Kingdom, managing relations with the Netherlands, providing diplomatic representation, and ensuring institutional continuity.

Without a Minister Plenipotentiary, Aruba risks losing influence and political weight within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

A Reflection of a Fragmented Government

Maduro further stated that the AVP motion is more than just a parliamentary document. It reflects a weakened and fragmented government, one that lacks leadership and effective communication, where internal power struggles appear to take precedence over collective responsibility and good governance.
