An Aruba delegation recently met with Mr. Andy Lee of the Raad van State, the Dutch Council of State, which represents Aruba in the Netherlands. The meeting, attended by members of the MEP party, was described by parliamentary representative Shailiny Tromp Lee as very productive. Although several points were discussed, the most pressing issue was the Rijkswet, a law causing significant concern for the people of Aruba.

The Rijkswet, one of the key topics currently affecting Aruba, has drawn attention in the Netherlands. The MEP party has made efforts to provide accurate information about the law’s potential impact on Aruba. However, MEP members, including Tromp Lee, emphasized that a COHO (Central Government Authority) agreement had become an internal arrangement and should not require a new Rijkswet.

During the meeting with the Raad van State, various arguments were presented. The COHO was initially seen as a solution, but it no longer remains a viable option on the table. However, the Rijkswet HOFA remains relevant for discussion. Tromp Lee urged for more reflection on past decisions and not to forget Aruba’s history in the process.

The discussion highlighted that there is no consensus within the Aruba Parliament on the Rijkswet HOFA, with differing opinions on the matter. Tromp Lee emphasized this point in discussions with Mr. Lee, noting that while the Raad van State plays a crucial role in advising the Dutch government, it is important that Aruba’s perspective is carefully considered.

Despite the ongoing debate, Tromp Lee expressed hope that the Raad van State’s advice would help steer the process in a more favorable direction for Aruba. She also acknowledged that while there is no final decision yet, the MEP faction in the Netherlands is committed to addressing the Rijkswet with careful attention and critical reflection.
