The Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) has proudly announced another major step forward in medical innovation. HOH is now the first hospital in the Caribbean region to acquire and use the state-of-the-art Olympus 3D camera system for laparoscopic surgeries.

This advanced system allows surgeons to view internal organs in 3D during minimally invasive operations, offering clearer depth perception and enhanced precision. The new technology leads to shorter surgery times, fewer complications, and faster recovery for patients. It also helps reduce the hospital’s waiting list for laparoscopic procedures, significantly improving patient care.

According to Dr. Yuri Casseres, surgeon and member of HOH’s Board of Directors, this acquisition represents an important milestone for both the hospital and the community. “This investment by the Hospital and AZV is a great achievement for Aruba. It increases both the quality and efficiency of laparoscopic surgeries, which benefits patients across the island,” he said.

Recently, Dr. Justin Smit and the operating room team successfully performed several gastric bypass surgeries using the new 3D camera, with Olympus representatives present to assist and answer technical questions in real-time. “The surgeries went perfectly,” said Dr. Smit. “The device is user-friendly and doesn’t require extensive training. The 3D view feels natural and smooth, and it can be easily switched back to 2D or ultra-HD when needed. The depth perception is remarkable—you can see much finer details of the organs.”

This innovation marks a significant milestone for HOH and for Aruba’s healthcare system, showcasing the hospital’s dedication to innovation, excellence, and the well-being of its patients. By leading the Caribbean in surgical technology, HOH continues to strengthen its commitment to providing top-quality medical care locally.
