Aruba Tax Department Explains Digital Filing Changes for Married Couples

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba Tax Department Explains Digital Filing Changes for Married Couples as the Department of Taxes Aruba (DIMP) prepares to introduce a new digital process for filing income tax returns through its online platform.

In an interview with Matutino DIARIO, Meverly Romano, Public Relations Officer for DIMP, explained how the new digital system will change the way married couples submit their tax declarations.

Separate Digital Accounts Required

Romano explained that under the previous paper-based system, married couples received one joint tax declaration form, which was issued in the husband’s name.

Both spouses completed, signed, and submitted the same form together to the Tax Department.

Under the new Bo Impuesto (BOI) online platform, however, each spouse will use their own personal account to complete their portion of the tax declaration.

Both Returns Must Be Submitted

According to Romano, the new system requires both spouses to complete and submit their respective digital forms before the declaration is officially received by DIMP.

She explained that if one spouse signs and submits the form but the other has not yet completed and submitted theirs, the tax declaration will not be processed by the department.

This digital process is designed to ensure that both spouses have completed their individual responsibilities before the declaration is finalized.

Authorization Option Available

Romano noted that some households may prefer for one spouse to prepare both tax returns.

In those cases, the system will allow one spouse to authorize the other through the BOI portal to complete, sign, and submit the declaration on their behalf.

According to DIMP, this feature is intended to provide flexibility while maintaining the security and integrity of the online filing process.

More Information to Follow

Romano emphasized that the digital platform is intended to offer the same functionality previously available through paper forms, but in an electronic format.

She added that DIMP will provide additional guidance and detailed instructions once the filing period officially begins, helping taxpayers understand how to use the new online system.

The Department of Taxes encouraged married couples to familiarize themselves with the upcoming digital filing process as Aruba continues modernizing its public services.
