After the catastrophic Category 5 hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on Thursday, October 28, causing massive destruction in the eastern part of the island, the people of Aruba are uniting to support their Caribbean neighbor.

The Government of Aruba, together with the Honorary Consul of Jamaica in Aruba, is actively coordinating humanitarian aid under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate a joint relief response. Meetings were held last Friday and Monday at the Government Administration Building to organize the relief efforts.

The Aruba Red Cross has been mobilized to assist in this humanitarian mission. Donation channels have been established to ensure that assistance reaches Jamaica quickly and efficiently.

Donation points will be set up at various designated locations around Aruba for the collection of contributions to Jamaica.

Supporters can also donate to the Red Cross Aruba–Jamaica Relief Fund through Aruba Bank, account name: Donate to Red Cross Aruba Jamaica Relief Fund, account number: 0384010990.

Items being accepted include non-perishable food, safe and appropriate fresh produce, hygiene products for women and babies, and bottled water.

The Consul of Jamaica in Aruba is also in contact with YMCA Aruba to explore using its facilities as official donation centers to simplify distribution and reduce transport challenges.

A community meeting for Jamaicans living in Aruba will take place this Thursday at 7:00 PM at Kulture Café, San Nicolas.

During the meeting, participants will receive information on the donation process, drop-off points, and coordination efforts between Jamaican representatives and local authorities.

The Government of Aruba has conveyed the deep gratitude of the Jamaican people and community in Aruba for all material, food, and financial contributions supporting Jamaica’s relief and recovery efforts.
