Stimami Sterilisami’ Continues as a Vital Community Platform for Animal Welfare

A Sustainable Solution to End the ‘Kill Cage’ in Aruba

ORANJESTAD – The widely supported initiative Stimami Sterilisami—which translates to “Love Me, Sterilize Me”—continues to play a crucial role in addressing Aruba’s street animal overpopulation crisis. Originally launched in late 2015 by Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, this community-driven platform promotes mass sterilization as a humane and sustainable alternative to the controversial and tragic practice known as the ‘Kill Cage’.

In recent weeks, growing public outcry has arisen surrounding the continued use of the ‘Kill Cage,’ where unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized due to the island’s uncontrolled pet population. With an estimated 7,000 animals euthanized annually, many of them sick or starving, awareness is mounting that sterilization is the only long-term solution.

Without sterilization, the stray dog and cat population can multiply exponentially—an average of 11,000 new animals within just five years. Recognizing this, Stimami Sterilisami has already funded the sterilization of approximately 5,900 animals through partnerships with local vets and organizations.

💰 Subsidy and Community Support

By the end of 2017, the program’s costs reached Afl. 680,000, generously funded by:

  • Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort: Afl. 390,000

  • Aruba Tourism Authority: Afl. 100,000

  • Tourism Product Enhancement Fund (TPEF): Afl. 190,000

The program continues in 2018 with full momentum. In February, sterilizations performed by animal foundations will be fully covered, while pet owners will receive subsidies, reducing costs to just Afl. 75 for dogs and Afl. 35 for cats.

Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort has pledged an additional Afl. 250,000 for 2018, while TPEF will contribute Afl. 95,000. Still, the program urgently seeks additional funding to ensure its long-term viability.

🌿 A Community-Wide Effort for a Healthier Aruba

This is more than a welfare campaign—it’s a community transformation. Sterilization not only prevents suffering and death but also eliminates the need for euthanasia cages. It’s a win for the animals, the public, and the island’s reputation.

Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort extends gratitude to:

  • Yessy Arends, who brought the idea forward

  • All participating veterinarians offering special rates

  • Volunteer Miguel Garcia, for his dedicated administration work

  • The Aruba Tourism Authority and TPEF for their support

  • And every responsible pet owner who chooses sterilization

Together, Aruba can end unnecessary cruelty and build a compassionate, sustainable future for animals and people alike.
