Mike de Meza has expressed support for increasing Aruba’s minimum wage, arguing that rising living costs call for action to protect residents with limited incomes, Diario reports on November 5.
Purchasing power at centre of appeal
The parliamentarian said that support for lower-income households had been a recurring focus during his political career. He pointed to expenses such as groceries, clothing, medicine and fuel when explaining his position.
Those remarks express his assessment of household pressures, rather than a new statistical measure of price increases.
Allowances and business compensation discussed
De Meza said leaders should make decisions while continuing responsible discussions with business groups and unions. Among the options he mentioned were increasing the reparatie toeslag allowance and providing compensation to companies.
The report sets out his position in the debate. It does not announce an enacted wage rate, a confirmed allowance increase or an implementation date.
