Aruba weapon searches without individual suspicion in designated high-risk neighbourhoods are the subject of a legislative proposal sought by police chief Ramon Arnhem, according to NoticiaCla.
Chief says additional legal authority is needed
Reporting on an interview with Aruba.nu, NoticiaCla said Arnhem called for the measure following several shootings. Justice Minister Arthur Dowers has been working on legislation, but police do not currently have the authority for the proposed neighbourhood searches, the report said.
Patrols increased while investigations continue
Police have increased patrols in crime hotspots using specialized units, arrest teams and police dog handlers, according to the report. Arnhem said investigators had not established whether recent shootings were retaliatory, despite the presence of rival criminal groups.
He also emphasized cooperation with schools and community organizations to discourage young people from becoming involved in crime. The report does not announce enactment of the proposed search powers or identify an implementation date.
