The first Shoco Sanctuary chick of Aruba’s new breeding season has been discovered at the entrance to an artificial underground nest.
Young owl found at an artificial nest
According to NoticiaCla, Aruba Birdlife Conservation announced that Elizabeth Filipelli of the Duval Audubon Society spotted the chick at Shoco Sanctuary.
The discovery provides evidence that the protected owls are using artificial nests installed by the conservation organization.
Aruba’s shoco faces several threats
The shoco is a protected species found only in Aruba. The report identified habitat loss, free-roaming dogs and cats, and boas among the threats confronting the island’s owl population.
Public asked to keep away from nests
Aruba Birdlife Conservation asked residents and visitors to maintain their distance and avoid disturbing nesting areas. Young owls need quiet surroundings and a secure habitat during this vulnerable stage of development.
The first chick of the season gives the sanctuary an early indication that its artificial nesting program is being used.
