DVG Reports Rise in Fever and Respiratory Illness

Aruba’s Department of Public Health, known as DVG, has reported an increase in fever cases accompanied by respiratory symptoms and flu-like illness. The department said its surveillance system is also registering cases of influenza B.

DVG issued the public notice on September 19 and asked residents to take steps that can reduce the spread of respiratory illness, with particular attention to people who face a higher risk of complications.

Higher-risk groups urged to take precautions

The department identified adults aged 60 and older, children under five, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems as groups that should be especially cautious.

DVG recommended frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with people who are ill and continuing prescribed medication. It also said higher-risk residents should consider influenza vaccination. The influenza vaccine is available through DVG’s Infectious Diseases Section.

Residents seeking vaccination information can contact DVG at 522-4200.

DVG advises sick residents to stay home

People experiencing fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, fatigue or other flu symptoms were advised to remain home and limit contact with others while ill. DVG also recommended avoiding visits with vulnerable people and staying away from crowded places.

The guidance includes coughing or sneezing into the elbow, washing hands regularly, ventilating the home, drinking fluids and resting. DVG cautioned residents not to take antibiotics without medical direction because antibiotics do not treat viruses such as influenza.

When to seek medical attention

DVG advised contacting a family doctor when symptoms worsen, a fever persists or there is concern about a person’s condition. It said urgent medical help should be sought for difficulty breathing, severe chest pain or pressure, confusion, severe weakness or other signs of rapid deterioration.
