Aruba Tightens Watersports Safety Coordination

Aruba watersports safety is moving toward tighter inter-agency coordination, more consistent inspections and consequences for businesses that fail to comply with existing rules.

Tourism and Transport Minister Wendrick Cicilia met with Directie Scheepvaart, the Marine Police, Beach Police and other maritime partners. The agencies plan a permanent safety platform to improve communication, share information and coordinate enforcement.

Inspections and permit consequences

DIARIO reported that watersports vessels are inspected every six months. Operators may face permit action for unsafe conduct, including operating without a spotter or propeller guard, or allowing activity under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Marine Police also reported equipment challenges. Funding for a replacement patrol boat and other equipment is expected to be included in a future budget. Officials said the Aruba watersports safety effort builds on recommendations made after a fatal water incident in 2022.
