ORANJESTAD, Aruba — The Caya Grandi Cleaning Pilot is testing a specialized sweeper and steam-cleaning machine to determine whether new equipment could provide a more effective way to clean and maintain one of downtown Oranjestad’s busiest streets.
Infrastructure Minister René Herdé joined officials and staff from the Department of Public Works, or DOW, to observe the launch of the pilot project.
The specialized Sweeper Machine is operated by RJ Road Cleaning and Services and is designed to sweep and steam-clean paved surfaces.
During the demonstration, the equipment was tested directly on the klinkers used throughout Caya Grandi.
Caya Grandi Cleaning Pilot Tests New Method
DOW will evaluate the results of the Caya Grandi Cleaning Pilot before determining whether the machine could provide an effective method for maintaining the street.
The objective is not simply to sweep away loose material.
The equipment uses steam as part of the cleaning process, allowing authorities to examine whether it can provide a deeper level of cleaning on the specialized paving surface.
Caya Grandi presents particular challenges because maintenance equipment must be suitable for both its klinkers and the existing infrastructure running through the street.
Tram Rails Create Additional Challenge
One of the factors DOW must consider is the tram system.
Rails run through Caya Grandi, meaning cleaning equipment must be able to operate carefully around them without creating problems for the existing infrastructure.
The type of paving also requires consideration when selecting machinery and cleaning methods.
For that reason, the pilot gives DOW an opportunity to observe the machine under actual conditions rather than deciding based only on its technical specifications.
Officials can evaluate how effectively it cleans the surface, how it performs around the tram rails and whether it is suitable for regular use in the area.

The cleaning test comes as government continues broader efforts to revitalize downtown Oranjestad.
