ORANJESTAD (AAN) – As part of the Directie Ouderenzaken (DOZ) “Generation Swap” project, young members of Scouting Ora Ubao recently participated in a special educational activity focused on preserving Aruba’s culinary traditions and strengthening connections between generations.
The event took place at YMCA Dakota and brought together Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, and Scout leaders with senior citizens who shared their knowledge and experience in preparing traditional Aruban dishes.
During the interactive workshop, the young participants learned how to prepare classic Aruban foods such as pan bati, funchi, tutu, and corned beef, along with other traditional recipes that have been part of Aruban households for generations.
In addition to learning cooking techniques and recipes, the scouts gained insight into the history and cultural significance of these dishes. They actively participated by mixing ingredients, preparing dough, helping with cooking, and enjoying the meals they created.
At the end of the activity, the children took their homemade dishes home to share with their fathers in celebration of Father’s Day. Parents and family members responded positively to the food prepared by the young participants.
The initiative successfully strengthened practical life skills while creating meaningful connections between younger and older generations. It also helped preserve valuable Aruban traditions and cultural heritage.
Scouting Ora Ubao expressed gratitude to the senior participants for sharing their knowledge and to DOZ for organizing the Generation Swap initiative, which promotes respect, learning, and cooperation between generations in Aruba.
