ORANJESTAD (AAN): Lito Laclé, President of the Police Union of Aruba (SPA), has set a deadline of June 15 for High Commissioner Ramon Arnhem to respond to letters regarding police safety. During an interview earlier this week, Laclé highlighted urgent concerns currently facing both the union and active police officers.
According to Laclé, the safety of officers on active street duty is a primary concern, specifically the shortage of bulletproof vests and bodycams. He noted that the Department of Legislation and Legal Affairs (DWJZ) sent an official email to Arnhem in June 2025 outlining the legal procedures required for legislative changes. However, the SPA reports that DWJZ has not yet received an official reaction on the matter.
The union is urging the High Commissioner, the Ministry of Justice, and the Parliament of Aruba to prioritize the safety of police personnel. SPA submitted four letters earlier this week and is awaiting a concrete response regarding the timeline for the delivery of protective materials to officers in street service.
In addition to safety equipment, Laclé addressed issues concerning “burgerpersoneel,” or civilian staff. He pointed out discrepancies in overtime pay, noting that while the workforce has decreased to fewer than 60 employees, some staff are not receiving compensation for their extra hours.
Laclé emphasized that the SPA continues to monitor all matters affecting the police force and is working to achieve clarity and solutions for these ongoing concerns.
