Pieters Says Netherlands Lacks Understanding of Aruba

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Parliamentarian Eduard Pieters has raised concerns about a lack of understanding in the Netherlands regarding Aruba’s realities and challenges.

During his political mission to The Hague, the Aruba Netherlands Relations Debate focused not only on opposition to the Rijkswet HOFA, but also on what Pieters described as a disconnect between Dutch decision-making and the situation in Aruba.

According to Pieters, many Dutch politicians—especially newer members—have limited or no direct experience with Aruba or other Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, leading to incomplete perspectives on key issues.

He emphasized that Aruba should not be viewed as a financial risk, highlighting improvements such as economic growth, reduced debt, and a recent credit rating upgrade.

The Aruba Netherlands Relations Debate also addressed concerns about increasing external control over autonomous countries within the Kingdom, with Pieters describing it as a gradual process over time.

He stressed the importance of Aruba continuing to present its position internationally, educate stakeholders, and defend its constitutional autonomy.

The Aruba Netherlands Relations Debate reflects broader discussions about governance, autonomy, and the relationship between Aruba and the Netherlands.
