ORANJESTAD (AAN): Aruba is hosting the 21st edition of the Overseas Countries and Territories – European Union Forum (OCT-EU), bringing together international leaders to address shared global challenges.

The forum serves as a key platform for dialogue between the European Union and its Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), with a strong focus on cooperation, sustainability, and resilience.

European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, emphasized the importance of the event, especially in a time marked by global tensions and shared challenges affecting island regions.

He highlighted that territories within the OCT framework face similar issues such as climate change, extreme weather events, maritime security, and energy transition. According to him, the OCT EU Forum Aruba Cooperation is essential to developing effective and sustainable solutions.

The European Union aims to transform cooperation into tangible results through investments that directly benefit local communities. One example includes regional programs using European satellite technology to improve storm monitoring and disaster preparedness in the Caribbean.

Peter Borg, Minister from Greenland, also stressed the importance of historical ties and partnerships between island territories and Europe. He noted that despite differences in size and population, islands like Aruba and Greenland share many of the same challenges.

The OCT EU Forum Aruba Cooperation provides an opportunity for these regions to work together, share knowledge, and accelerate development through collective action rather than working independently.

The presence of international leaders at the forum highlights the growing importance of multilateral cooperation and investment in sustainable solutions for the future of overseas territories.
