Aruba government’s responsibility to protect local consumers highlighted by Jennifer Arends-Reyes

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Jennifer Arends-Reyes, leader of the AVP faction in Parliament, emphasized the Aruba consumer protection responsibility recently, raising concerns about the increase in container and shipping transport tariffs entering Aruba. According to Arends-Reyes, these tariff hikes directly impact the cost of living, especially for Aruban families across the island.

“Every increase in transport costs is directly reflected in the prices our people pay, particularly in supermarkets and for daily-use products. This cannot continue without clear explanations and actions,” Arends-Reyes stated.

In her official questions to the government, Arends-Reyes sought detailed information about the nature of the tariff increases, the effective date, and the primary factors causing the price hikes. Among the possible causes were rising fuel costs, disruptions in global supply chains, container shortages, port tariffs, and geopolitical factors.

Arends-Reyes also requested that the government conduct a clear analysis of how these increases contribute to general inflation in Aruba, specifically which products and sectors are most affected, including basic food products, construction materials, and other goods essential for families.

Furthermore, Arends-Reyes asked whether the government had engaged in discussions with importers and logistics providers to minimize the impact of these tariff hikes on the Aruba consumer.

“We must protect the Aruba consumer. The government has a responsibility to act proactively and find sustainable solutions to prevent import costs from rising uncontrollably,” she added.

Finally, Arends-Reyes urged the government to explore options like reducing taxes or import duties on essential products. She also emphasized the need for a structural plan to reduce Aruba’s dependency on a limited number of transport routes and enhance the island’s economic resilience.

Arends-Reyes is awaiting a prompt and concrete response from the government, alongside actions that will help alleviate the pressure on Aruba’s community and protect the well-being of Aruban citizens.
