A special Istanbul Convention Aruba presentation was recently organized by Soroptimist International Club Aruba (SICA) to educate its members about the importance of the international treaty and its relevance to Aruba.

The Istanbul Convention, adopted in 2011, is an international human rights treaty aimed at preventing violence against women and domestic violence, protecting victims, and ensuring accountability for offenders . Although the Netherlands ratified the convention in 2017, Aruba has not yet completed the process of ratification.

During the Istanbul Convention Aruba presentation, Ms. Michella van Loon, a legal expert, provided detailed insights into the treaty and its potential impact on Aruba. She explained how the convention could strengthen Aruba’s legal and social protection systems while promoting a culture of zero tolerance toward violence against women and girls.

President of SICA, Magaly Maduro, emphasized that the organization remains committed to empowering and equipping its members with knowledge. She highlighted that initiatives like the Istanbul Convention Aruba presentation are essential in supporting equality, peace, and social development on the island.

Ms. van Loon translated complex legal concepts into practical and understandable information, stressing that prevention begins with education, awareness, and the courage to break silence.

Participants of the Istanbul Convention Aruba presentation not only gained valuable knowledge but also felt inspired to take action. The event reinforced the message that combating violence against women is a shared responsibility within the community.

SICA reaffirmed its commitment to continue promoting awareness and contributing to a safer and more inclusive society in Aruba, where women and girls can live free from fear and violence.
