The cleanup of the Parkietenbos Landfill Cleanup must begin this year following a technical investigation that revealed serious environmental and safety risks. This was confirmed by the results of a study conducted by engineering firm Witteveen & Bos.

The investigation identified three urgent issues that, according to the government, require immediate and structural action.

One major concern is the steep southern slope of the landfill, which borders directly on the sea. Due to its instability, waste material is sliding into the ocean, posing a direct environmental threat to the marine ecosystem. Technical intervention is necessary to prevent further damage.

Additionally, sixteen locations were identified where underground waste is smoldering. In these cases, waste burns beneath the surface without visible flames. Occasionally, it resurfaces, producing smoke and foul odors that affect nearby residents and create health and safety risks.

Asbestos Presence

Another serious issue is the presence of asbestos on the site. This hazardous material requires specialized handling and high costs to safely isolate it and prevent harmful fibers from being released into the air. The Ministry emphasized the need for a carefully structured technical plan to address this matter responsibly.

The government considers the current situation at Parkietenbos unsustainable and states that structural measures are necessary to prevent further environmental damage and health risks.

Future Vision for the Area

Beyond remediation, the government is also considering a complete transformation of Parkietenbos. The long-term vision includes converting the landfill into an area with native vegetation and environmental restoration.

The plan focuses on soil remediation, ecological rehabilitation, and improving the quality of life for surrounding neighborhoods. The goal is not only to eliminate long-standing nuisance issues for residents but also to create a new green space that contributes to the island’s overall well-being.
