The Superior Court in Oranjestad has decided to postpone the case concerning the attempted murder of Chapi after a dispute over the Chinese translator. The case involves an appeal by the Public Ministry against the decision of the Court of First Instance, which had acquitted ZX, a Chinese man, of charges related to attempted murder and severe mistreatment on June 30, 2021.
The defense lawyer, Mr. R. Marchena, protested the use of a specific Chinese translator who had been present during the incident. The lawyer claimed that the translator was affiliated with another party, raising concerns about impartiality. He argued that the translator’s involvement in the case was inappropriate, as the translator had previously worked with another party in the case.
The court heard the lawyer’s objections and reviewed a video showing the translator’s presence at the Chinese Club on the day of the incident. The Hof Postpones Case and rejected the translator’s involvement, stating that although the translator had worked with the court for over 10 years, his connection to the case was not suitable.
In light of the translator dispute, the Superior Court decided to postpone the case to May 22, 2026, at 8:30 AM, to ensure that a new, impartial translator is available. The new translator will be arranged through Hulanda and will provide translation services via video conference.
