ORANJESTAD (AAN): Volunteer tourism in Aruba was highlighted this week during a community-focused activity attended by Minister of Tourism, Transport and Labor Wendrick Cicilia, alongside a group of visiting tourists.

The activity took place at the historic home of Bernadina Grovell d.f.m., affectionately known as “the mother of culture” in Aruba. Through a simple yet meaningful initiative—painting the historic home—the group demonstrated how volunteer tourism in Aruba can create lasting community impact beyond traditional travel experiences.

The project formed part of “The Common Good” conference and was designed as a cultural volunteer initiative that connects visitors directly with Aruba’s heritage while contributing positively to the local community. By bringing tourists and residents together in service, the initiative showed how tourism can extend beyond leisure and economic value to touch lives in a visible and lasting way.

Bernadina Grovell’s legacy as a cultural pioneer and community figure continues to inspire generations. Honoring her home through collective action served as a reminder that heritage preservation is a shared responsibility—one that strengthens social cohesion and deepens the connection between visitors and the island they visit.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, volunteer tourism in Aruba aligns with a broader vision for inclusive and responsible tourism development, where community well-being and cultural preservation play a central role. The initiative also reflects the growing importance of volunteer tourism as a meaningful way for visitors to give back to destinations they enjoy.

When visitors engage directly with local stories and contribute through volunteer work at the places they visit, tourism becomes a force for connection, empathy, and shared prosperity. The ministry confirmed it will continue exploring opportunities that unite service, culture, and tourism, reinforcing the idea that Aruba’s success is measured not only by visitor arrivals or economic indicators, but also by community care, opportunity, and impact.
