Utilities Aruba NV has completed key upgrades to its incineration systems to ensure cleaner combustion, greater efficiency, lower costs, and cleaner air emissions, according to Director Joseph Everon.

Everon explained that after a directive and thorough evaluation last June, the utility decided to enhance the incineration process to better protect the environment, improve safety for employees, and manage the flow of medical waste and sludge more effectively. The upgraded incinerators and installations are now fully operational.

He also noted that two mobile incineration units meeting all required standards were procured to prevent interruptions in waste processing, ensuring continuity even during emergencies when medical waste continues to arrive.

A key improvement is the switch to LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as fuel, which burns cleaner and more efficiently than previous options. The upgraded systems now use dual-chamber technology, which ensures more complete combustion of pathogens and results in cleaner air emissions.

In addition, a modern monitoring system has been installed to continuously track emissions. If emissions deviate from acceptable levels, the system sends signals that automatically adjust the process to maintain compliance with European environmental standards.

Everon also clarified that within the AWSS (Aruba Waste and Sanitation Services) portfolio, the upgraded incinerators can now safely burn:

  • Medical waste

  • Sludge from wastewater treatment facilities

  • Confiscated goods

  • Important documents

  • Animal carcasses

The upgrades reflect Aruba’s commitment to responsibly managing hazardous waste while protecting public health and the environment.
