ORANJESTAD (AAN): The Public Prosecutor has requested a prison sentence of seven years for a 43-year-old man identified as B., who is accused of kidnapping, raping, and severely abusing his wife, V., on August 11, 2025.
The case was heard in court on Friday morning, where the victim, V., was present and exercised her right to address the court. She also filed a claim for damages.
When questioned by the judge, B. stated that at the time of the incident he was under the influence of drugs and claimed he was not himself. He admitted to physically abusing V. but said he could not fully recall the events. The judge pointed out that during police interrogation on August 11, 2025, B. did not mention memory loss. According to police statements, V. reported that B. struck her multiple times with a mobile phone.
The court reviewed disturbing photographs showing the victim’s condition while hospitalized, including severe facial swelling and injuries. Upon seeing the images, B. lowered his head and stated that he could not believe he had committed such acts.
The judge explained that despite V. telling B. not to come to her workplace, he went there, forcibly grabbed her, dragged her outside while she screamed for help, and forced her into a vehicle. Surveillance footage from the workplace reportedly confirms the kidnapping.
According to testimony, once at a residence, B. locked the doors and forced V. to have sexual intercourse against her will. V. stated that she repeatedly refused, but B. persisted. At one point, he demanded access to her smartphone and struck her in the face with it, causing severe injuries.
The Public Prosecutor presented WhatsApp messages showing that days before the incident, B. persistently demanded sexual relations, which V. refused. On the day of the incident, B. went to her workplace, abducted her, and later assaulted and raped her. The Prosecutor emphasized that it was highly unlikely that any sexual contact occurred voluntarily after such violence and coercion.
V. testified emotionally in court, stating that it was a miracle she survived. She described the lasting trauma, the impact on their children—who now fear their father—and the ongoing medical and psychological treatment required. One of the children reportedly discovered drugs in the home, further contributing to the family’s distress.
V. stated that she lives with constant fear and emotional pain. While she said she forgives B., she asked the court not only for punishment but also for measures to ensure safety and prevent similar incidents in the future. She requested compensation of 15,000 florins for emotional damages and 300 florins for her damaged mobile phone.
The Public Prosecutor stated that B.’s drug addiction played a central role in the events and highlighted the severe physical injuries suffered by V., including a cerebral hemorrhage that required five days of hospitalization. The Prosecutor requested a seven-year prison sentence, minus time already served, and asked the court to approve the compensation claims. The Prosecutor also recommended mandatory treatment and rehabilitation during any future conditional release.
Defense attorney Mr. D. Croes described the case as tragic and argued that drug addiction was the root cause of the incident. He claimed that B. was mistreated during police detention and questioned the severity of the sentence requested. The defense suggested that some actions occurred in self-defense and emphasized the victim’s request for rehabilitation rather than punishment alone.
In an emotional statement, B. told the court that he had sought help but did not receive adequate support. He claimed he was assaulted by police officers and said no one would believe him.
The judge closed the hearing and announced that the verdict will be delivered on January 30, 2026.
