ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The Investigating Judge has extended the detention of a 24-year-old female driver suspected of causing a fatal traffic accident that has shocked the community and remains a major topic of discussion.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning near the end of the Sonesta Bridge, close to the entrance of Renaissance Mall in Oranjestad. The driver of a black Jeep Compass SUV reportedly struck two pedestrians who were crossing the road. Both victims, a Dominican couple, lost their lives as a result of the collision.

On Thursday, the 24-year-old suspect was presented before the Public Prosecutor and subsequently before the Investigating Judge. She is suspected of causing the deadly traffic accident that took place on Sunday night, January 4, 2026.

The Public Prosecutor requested an extension of the suspect’s pretrial detention. After reviewing all investigation files and legal arguments, the Investigating Judge decided to grant the request and ordered that the suspect remain in custody for an additional 14 days.

As a result, the suspect, identified by the initials C.F., will be transferred to KIA Prison, where she will be held in the Huis van Bewaring (pretrial detention section).

The investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing.
