ORANJESTAD – The Belva Award Ceremony marked a historic milestone for Aruba’s cultural landscape on December 21, 2025, as the Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied (CCG), in collaboration with the Rasmussen Henriquez family, hosted the first-ever event honoring emerging contemporary artists in Aruba.

This prestigious initiative celebrates artistic excellence while reinforcing Aruba’s commitment to nurturing creative talent. The ceremony brought together artists, cultural leaders, and community supporters, all united by a shared appreciation for local creativity. With the launch of the Belva Award Aruba Artists program, CCG continues to strengthen Aruba’s role as a vibrant cultural hub in the Caribbean.

Award Recipients

The Belva Award was presented to Kim Violenes, whose work was recognized for its artistic depth, originality, and strong conceptual vision. Her contemporary practice reflects Aruba’s evolving cultural identity while honoring its roots, contributing meaningfully to the island’s artistic dialogue.

An Honorable Mention was awarded to Carolyn Geerman, recognizing the exceptional quality and consistency of her work. This distinction is reserved for submissions that demonstrate outstanding artistic merit and long-term potential, highlighting the diversity and strength of Aruba’s contemporary art scene.

Honoring the Legacy of Belva Rasmussen Henriquez

The Belva Award was established in memory of Belva Rasmussen Henriquez, an Aruban woman deeply devoted to culture, art, and community. Born in Aruba, she maintained a strong connection to the island throughout her life, even after relocating to the United States. Her love for Aruba, its people, and its cultural heritage remained constant until her passing in 2024.

Inspired by her lifelong passion for culture, her son Ben Rasmussen created a sustainable fund to support emerging local artists. Through this initiative, the family transformed personal values into a lasting contribution to Aruba’s cultural future.

Strengthening Aruba’s Cultural Future

By supporting emerging artists, the Belva Award plays an important role in shaping Aruba’s cultural identity and creative economy. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote Caribbean culture and ensure continued artistic development across the region.

The Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied continues to play a key role in supporting culture in the Dutch Caribbean through grants, partnerships, and awards that empower artists and cultural organizations. The Belva Award Ceremony stands as a long-term commitment to artistic growth, community engagement, and cultural pride in Aruba.
