An urgent solution was reached just in time before Christmas after several importers raised concerns about refrigerated containers, including fruits and vegetables, that had arrived in Aruba but risked being delayed at the Barcadera port.
Without quick intervention, there was a high risk that the containers would not be released from the port on time. Minister of Finance Geoffrey Wever took immediate action after being informed of the logistical problems faced by the sole company responsible for supplying these goods to Aruba.
Minister Wever promptly met with representatives of Aruba Customs to address the issue. During this emergency consultation with Customs experts, a temporary solution was agreed upon: Customs would accept handwritten Bills of Lading (BOL) stamped accordingly, allowing officials to calculate the required duties and taxes so the goods could legally enter Aruba.
In addition to this emergency measure, Customs also decided to open the gates of the Barcadera Wharf on Christmas Eve, December 24, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., enabling importers to retrieve their refrigerated containers in time.
Minister Wever expressed his appreciation for the swift cooperation, stating:
