Minister Arthur Dowers recently announced that he has reviewed and given the green light for the AWSS project to continue its normal process, marking a positive step for Aruba’s infrastructure and environmental management.
The Aruba Wastewater and Sanitation System (AWSS) was established to manage and ensure the sustainability of the island’s wastewater infrastructure. Since July 2024, the wastewater network, three purification plants (Bubali, Parkietenbos, Zeewijk), and the incinerator facility have been transferred to AWSS management.
Minister Dowers explained that the short-term focus is on stabilizing facilities and addressing deferred maintenance. Priority is given to improving operational performance, capacity, and purification clarity. At Bubali, purification efficiency is targeted to increase gradually from approximately 35% to 65%, eventually reaching 90%. Parkietenbos and Zeewijk plants are being optimized to ensure sustainable long-term performance. Additionally, AWSS is addressing critical points in the residual material treatment at the incinerator.
AWSS is strengthening water quality monitoring, laboratory services, and environmental measurements in collaboration with external partners. Organizational improvements include better infrastructure and equipment management, maintenance, safety, operational continuity, and staff development.
In the long term, AWSS is developing a comprehensive resource management plan that includes scenario analysis, investment prioritization, water reuse opportunities, and new revenue streams.
