Government and Animal Foundations Not Listening to Damage Caused by Dogs in Farmlands

In an interview with Matutino DIARIO, Jair Britten, President of the Pro-Cunukero Foundation, expressed his deep frustration regarding the ongoing damage that stray dogs are causing to local farmers. According to him, neither the government nor the organizations responsible for protecting animals—such as dog and cat shelters—are paying attention to the growing problem.

Britten stated that the cunuceros are responsible and educated individuals who have approached the government, spoken with ministers, and contacted the various animal foundations, yet their concerns continue to be ignored.

He highlighted that Aruba has 12 animal welfare foundations, each working independently and offering personalized services, while the farmers provide a service to the entire community. Instead of solutions, the issue has worsened, Britten explained.

As an educated nation, Britten believes Aruba must take this matter seriously. “We are finishing 2025 and entering 2026 as an educated country. Let’s get this issue straight,” he emphasized.

The Pro-Cunukero Foundation continues to publicly report attacks on farmland by stray dogs, which are destroying agricultural production. “We need an agricultural revolution. We will show every project and every request for funding that needs to be supported across all sectors—because this aligns with the World Health Organization’s food security plan,” he added.

Britten also described the issue as a domestic responsibility, noting that many dog owners are irresponsible, which forces shelters to deal with an overwhelming number of animals. “If you don’t want dogs to be euthanized, then take proper care of them. Otherwise, euthanize them—simple!” Britten stated.
