A work through which Tomas and his family wish to express their love and gratitude to the island and its people

Mr. Tomas Gonzalez, an Argentinian resident who has lived in Aruba for more than 30 years and considers the island his home, is working on a heartfelt project titled “A Cross for Aruba,” which he has already developed as a detailed model.

Tomas explained that the inspiration came from the many times he passed by the area, observing the hill, until he finally managed to materialize his vision into a scale model — a process that took him seven years to complete.

During an interview with DIARIO, he described what his project represents:
“A Cross to bless the island of Aruba and its people, who are mostly Catholic. The Cross would be placed on the high point of Hooiberg, visible from any part of the island due to its unique design, becoming a distinctive symbol of Aruba in the Caribbean.”

He added: “The Cross has been designed with its own lighting system and will serve as a point of orientation for fishermen, locals, and tourists, adding beauty and unique identity. It will also function as a guiding light at sea, similar to a lighthouse.”

Tomas explained that the project would contribute significantly to tourism, becoming an iconic postcard image representing Aruba. He envisions multiple possible ways to realize this ambitious dream, with support and participation from the community, who will surely embrace the idea, as well as the necessary involvement of the government.

“The construction will naturally be entrusted to qualified professionals — architects, engineers, and others involved in such a project. In this way, I leave this cross as a symbol of my gratitude and as a legacy to my family, with whom we have lived much of our lives in this blessed land — our home, our siblings, children, grandchildren, and the entire people of Aruba, a paradise in the world. My deepest thanks,” Mr. Gonzalez concluded.
