Javier Estefanus Maduro, a former student of Dominicus College and Colegio Arubano, is making Aruba proud with his remarkable contributions to the future of pharmaceutical science. The young researcher, who holds a Bachelor’s in Biology and Medical Laboratory Research and a Master of Science in Pharmacy, has been part of a groundbreaking 3D-printed medication project in the Netherlands.

During his internship at Erasmus Medical Center (Erasmus MC), Javier worked under the guidance of Sejad Ayyoubi, a PhD candidate researching 3D-printed hydrocortisone tablets. The project aims to create customizable doses of medication not currently available on the market using advanced 3D printing technology.

Javier’s performance during his internship earned him a side position on the project, where he assisted with ongoing research and mentored new interns. After completing his Master’s in Pharmacy, he was offered a contract to continue at Erasmus MC, focusing on developing the “ink” used for 3D printing tablets, analyzing them for compliance with European Pharmacopeia standards — the legal and scientific reference framework for medicine quality across Europe.

His work contributed to a scientific paper co-authored with Ayyoubi, soon to be published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The article can be accessed online at www.bit.ly/3dpildo.

Today, Javier continues his professional journey as a pharmacist at Botica Benu Jan Heijns in Tilburg, pursuing specialization to become a licensed Community Pharmacist (Openbaar Apotheker). His achievements serve as an inspiration for young Arubans interested in science and innovation.

Congratulations to Javier Maduro and his family on this outstanding accomplishment — a proud moment for Aruba and its growing presence in global pharmaceutical research.
