Discovering Aruba: A Gen Z Traveler’s Wellness Journey to the ‘One Happy Island’

VIEWS

For most travelers, Aruba is known for its world-class beaches, turquoise waters, and year-round sunshine. But as M.E.N journalist Phoebe Jobling discovered, the island offers much more than postcard-perfect views—it’s also a destination for wellness, culture, and authentic connections.

Flying 11 hours from Manchester with a stopover in Amsterdam, Phoebe arrived on Aruba ready to disconnect from her phone and embrace the island’s slower, more mindful pace. What followed was an eye-opening itinerary filled with meditation on secluded beaches, mindful hikes, art workshops, authentic cuisine, and community-driven culture.

🌿 Wellness in Paradise

Her trip began with a holistic cacao ceremony on Savaneta Beach, followed by guided meditation at Alto Vista Chapel and along Aruba’s dramatic coastline. The experience was deeply emotional and restorative.

An art workshop at IndrArt Studio proved equally therapeutic. Hosted by self-taught artist Indra Zievinger, the class encouraged participants to let go of perfectionism and embrace creativity as a form of healing.

🏝 Beaches Beyond Compare

Aruba’s beaches are consistently ranked among the best in the world. Eagle Beach, voted #1 in the Caribbean and #2 globally by Tripadvisor, impressed with its white sands and iconic Fofoti trees. Palm Beach buzzed with resorts and nightlife, while Mangel Halto stood out as the island’s premier snorkeling spot.

🌍 Exploring Aruba’s Culture & Nature

Beyond the beaches, Arikok National Park offered desert landscapes, limestone caves, and ancient rock drawings. Meanwhile, the colorful murals of San Nicolas, Aruba’s second city, showcased vibrant street art that has revived the community through the Aruba Art Fair.

🍴 Authentic Flavors

From fried mahi-mahi and shrimp at Zeerovers, to smoothie bowls at Eduardo’s Hideaway, to alfresco fine dining at Papiamento and farm-to-table dishes at Taste My Aruba, Phoebe experienced the island’s rich culinary diversity blending Dutch, Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences.

😊 More Than a Slogan

Aruba’s slogan, “One Happy Island”, isn’t just a tagline—it’s a way of life. Despite rare rainfall during her visit, Phoebe found that the genuine warmth and happiness of Arubans defined the experience even more than the weather.

“It was the people who made my trip most worthwhile,” Phoebe concluded. “Everywhere you go, you’re greeted with smiles and open arms.”
