ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Member of Parliament Ruthlyn Lindor of the Futuro parliamentary faction has stressed the importance of government preparedness and the need for a dedicated emergency reserve fund.
In an interview with DIARIO, Lindor stated that the government must be internally prepared at all times. “Too often we look at what the government will do for us, but we must understand that the Crisis Management Office (CMO) plays a very important role,” she said.
Lindor recalled that a press conference was held in June at the start of hurricane season, during which the public was advised to have at least ten days’ worth of emergency supplies ready. She noted, however, that this level of preparedness is not common practice in Aruba because major emergencies are relatively rare.
She added that in January she once again reviewed the availability of essential supplies, such as water reserves, to assess whether there are sufficient in-house resources to last ten days. According to Lindor, this kind of preparation must be in place before a crisis occurs, ensuring that emergency supplies are readily available when needed.
The parliamentarian emphasized that although the CMO has its own budget, the Futuro faction is questioning the government about allocating a specific emergency fund. “We know that there are funds in reserve, but they must be properly allocated and readily accessible,” she said. “Just like individuals should always have an emergency fund, the government must do the same, so that when something happens, everything is already in place.”
