The Black Girl’s Guide to Aruba: Beyond the Beaches and Into the Culture

VIEWS

Aruba has long been a dream destination for its pristine white-sand beaches and turquoise waters—but on a recent visit to Oranjestad, I discovered there’s so much more waiting beyond the shoreline. Representing the Aruba Tourism Board, I explored a side of Aruba that’s rich with culture, flavor, and history—making it the perfect off-the-beaten-path destination for curious, conscious travelers.

A Cultural Mosaic in the Caribbean

What truly surprised me about Aruba was its cultural diversity. The island’s population is a vibrant blend of European, Latin, and Afro-Caribbean heritage, reflected in its language, music, cuisine, and art. One standout cultural marker is Papiamentu, a creole language rooted in Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and African languages. It’s widely spoken and represents Aruba’s rich historical intersections.

Where to Eat, Sip, and Savor

First Stop: Zeerover
After a 10-hour JetBlue flight from Los Angeles, I landed hungry—and Zeerover delivered. This no-frills, authentic Aruban seafood spot sits on a working fisherman’s pier. Freshly caught fried fish and shrimp, served with tangy house sauce and cornbread, was the perfect way to start my island adventure.

Dinner: Taste My Aruba
Later that evening, we dined at Taste My Aruba, a charming, family-owned farm-to-table and sea-to-table restaurant. The fried snapper and fish empanadas were standouts, and the warm hospitality made it a meal to remember.

Street Eats: Huchada Bakery
On Saturday morning, we grabbed fresh-baked pastries from Huchada, a popular local bakery frequented by island residents. Perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

Lunch: Kulture Café
Located inside the Community Museum in San Nicolas, this cozy café serves delicious bites with a side of history. The museum itself is housed in the restored Nicolaas Store, a heritage site in downtown San Nicolas.

Tours That Bring Aruba’s Story to Life

Walking Tour of Downtown Oranjestad
Led by the insightful Mr. Renwick Heronimo, we explored Aruba’s capital city on foot, visiting landmarks like the Town Hall, Fort Zoutman Willem III Tower, and Plaza Daniel Leo. We admired the Dutch colonial architecture and learned how different cultures have shaped the island’s identity.

Pepe Margo Distillery
To cool off post-tour, we visited this restored 19th-century Aruban home turned craft rum and gin distillery. With aloe-based cocktails and rich history, it was a memorable stop.

Street Art Tour in San Nicolas
We traveled 35 minutes south to San Nicolas and joined a vibrant street art tour led by Tito Bolivar of Artisa Art Gallery. Over 40 artists contributed colorful murals, many of which feature sunrise hues like orange, yellow, and purple—a visual love letter to the island.

Museum of Industry
Still in San Nicolas, we dove into Aruba’s industrial history, learning about its past as a producer of gold, phosphate, oil, aloe, and tourism—all of which shaped its economic evolution.

A Taste of the Unexpected: Alto Vista Winery & Distillery

Who would’ve thought Aruba had its own winery? Located on a scenic hilltop, Alto Vista Winery offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, surrounded by desert terrain and cacti. The estate sustainably produces sugarcane for its Red Star Rum and raises 10,000 chickens for organic egg production. The wine tasting featured standouts like Rosé, Chenin Gold, and a Tempranillo Reserve.

To wrap up the evening, we dined at Papiamento Aruba, a romantic spot known for its lush garden, glowing poolside ambiance, and charming cigar room—a magical setting to end a day filled with flavor and discovery.

Final Thoughts: Aruba Has Layers Worth Exploring

If you’re thinking about visiting Aruba, don’t just come for the beach. Come for the culture, the people, and the hidden gems that make this “One Happy Island” truly unforgettable. Whether you’re sipping rum in a historic home, admiring murals in San Nicolas, or tasting wine in the desert, Aruba will surprise you—and you’ll leave with more than just tan lines. You’ll leave with stories.
