A SEPPA minimum wage appeal is urging Aruba’s government and Parliament to give workers’ basic living costs greater weight in the wage debate, according to an October 19 report by 24ora.
Union contrasts wages with basic expenses
Secretary-general Magaly Brito cited a monthly legal minimum wage of 2,007.20 florins and an estimated 2,697 florins needed by a single person for basic expenses. The figures, as presented in the union’s statement, leave a monthly gap of 689.80 florins.
Business costs should not dominate, Brito argues
Brito acknowledged that employers and sectors would not all face the same impact from a wage increase. She argued that concern about business expenses should not consistently take priority over workers’ financial circumstances.
Appeal seeks government and parliamentary action
SEPPA called for a wage policy that supports a dignified standard of living. Its statement challenges the idea that meeting the legal minimum necessarily provides enough income. No new wage level or implementation date was announced in the report.
