Dangui Oduber Criticizes Government Over Rijkswet Hofa Debate

Parliamentarian Dangui Oduber has strongly criticized the Aruba government regarding the handling of the Rijkswet Hofa debate, claiming that the administration lacks public support to move forward with decisions that could affect Aruba’s Status Aparte and financial autonomy.

According to Oduber, the government failed to properly inform Parliament, trade unions, and the public about the submission of the proposed Kingdom law to the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom. He argued that such an important decision should have been openly discussed before any action was taken.

Concerns About Transparency

Oduber stated that the government’s approach to the Rijkswet Hofa debate in Aruba shows a lack of transparency. He accused the administration of withholding critical information from both lawmakers and the public.

He argued that while the government publicly highlights smaller initiatives, such as infrastructure or community projects, it has not provided the same level of communication about a policy that could significantly impact the island’s constitutional and financial autonomy.

According to Oduber, the government should have engaged in a broader national discussion before advancing the proposal at the Kingdom level.

Lack of Consensus

The parliamentarian also claimed that there is no national consensus supporting the proposed legislation.

He pointed out that several members of Parliament have expressed opposition to the measure, along with multiple labor unions representing thousands of workers. In addition, he referenced a petition reportedly signed by thousands of residents who oppose the proposed law.

Oduber argued that these developments demonstrate that public support for the proposal remains divided.

Financial Stability Argument

During his remarks, Oduber referenced recent financial assessments indicating improvements in Aruba’s fiscal position.

He noted that projections show the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio expected to fall below 50 percent, potentially reaching approximately 47 percent by 2028. According to him, the original justification for increased financial supervision from the Kingdom was linked to concerns about long-term financial sustainability.

Given the improved financial outlook, Oduber questioned whether additional oversight through the Rijkswet Hofa framework remains necessary.

Debate Over Aruba’s Autonomy

The Rijkswet Hofa debate in Aruba has become a highly sensitive political issue because it relates to financial governance within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Oduber warned that decisions affecting Aruba’s autonomy should be handled with caution and broad public consultation. He emphasized that Status Aparte, achieved in 1986, represents an important milestone in Aruba’s political development and national identity.

Continuing Political Discussion

The discussion surrounding the proposed legislation is expected to continue both within Parliament and among various social organizations.

Oduber concluded that Aruba’s future governance and financial independence should be determined through transparent dialogue and democratic participation, ensuring that decisions reflect the will of the Aruban people.
