ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Minister of Tourism Wendrick Cicilia addressed the media during a recent press conference regarding a proposal to close beaches for one day each month. While the concept initially received mixed reactions from some industry stakeholders, Cicilia presented it as a key component of a strategic orientation focused on “radical practices” and regenerative tourism.

Cicilia described the initiative as a bold move intended to launch ambitious ideas that will later be refined with partners. “To be a young minister and not be radical and bold is almost a sin,” Cicilia stated, justifying the aggressive approach. Citing scientific studies, he explained that providing a structured recovery period for beaches and the marine ecosystem could offer significant benefits to Aruba’s waters, which serve as vital economic assets.

The minister emphasized that maintaining clean seas and beaches is essential for the island’s tourism industry. By allowing the marine ecosystem time to regenerate, Aruba can preserve the quality of its natural resources. Cicilia added that implementing these regenerative tourism practices could set Aruba apart within the Caribbean and globally.

However, the minister acknowledged that the proposal requires further consultation. The government intends to dialogue with all tourism stakeholders and authorities to assess the operational feasibility of the beach closures. If stakeholders determine that the plan cannot be effectively executed in Aruba, Cicilia stated that the administration will instead evaluate other alternative practices to achieve regenerative tourism goals.
