Alarming increase in fire-related incidents in Aruba, warns Brandweer Aruba

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Francis Toussaint, the Public Relations Officer of Brandweer Aruba, has raised serious concerns about the alarming increase in fire-related incidents across the island. In an interview with DAILY, Toussaint explained that the number of cases has surged significantly, drawing attention to the importance of addressing this issue immediately.

Brandweer Aruba has responded to a total of 232 fire-related incidents this year, with 15 of those being building fires, including 5 bridge fires. The remaining cases have involved residential fires, particularly related to candles. Toussaint emphasized that this increase in fire cases is highly concerning, urging the community to take responsibility for fire prevention.

The primary causes of these incidents include electrical malfunctions, particularly those involving phone chargers left connected to beds. To reduce the risk of fire, Toussaint advises using phone chargers exclusively plugged into outlets rather than leaving them in bed.

Another common cause of fires is the improper placement of candles during religious ceremonies or rituals. Toussaint recommends always placing candles in a safe holder to prevent them from tipping over and catching nearby flammable materials. Additionally, keeping curtains and other flammable items away from candles is vital.

Gas cylinders that are not properly closed pose a significant risk as well. Toussaint stressed the importance of ensuring gas installations are carefully maintained, preferably using plastic gas pipes, to avoid leaks that could lead to explosions.

Household appliances such as fans and cookers can also lead to fires if not maintained properly. It’s essential to clean appliances regularly and ensure food is never left unattended while cooking.

Brandweer Aruba continues to urge the public to take responsibility for fire prevention, stating that security is not optional but a necessity. The community must be proactive in avoiding disasters, protecting homes, families, and lives in the process.
