ORANJESTAD (AAN): During his visit to Sint Maarten, in addition to attending meetings of the Justitieel Vierlanden Overleg (JVO), Aruba’s Minister of Justice, Arthur Dowers, held discussions with executives from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
UNOPS is currently active in Sint Maarten primarily to support recovery and reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Irma, which caused severe damage to the island in 2017. The organization is also providing support for the expansion of the Pointe Blanche Prison, drawing on its extensive expertise in technical supervision, financial oversight, and public project execution.
UNOPS specializes in managing large-scale reconstruction projects funded by international partners, ensuring transparent procurement, coherent project management, and compliance with international standards. Its work includes the reconstruction and improvement of schools, medical facilities, and public infrastructure.
The meeting took place within the framework of ongoing preparatory efforts toward the development of a new prison for Aruba, potentially under UNOPS supervision. Within the next two weeks, UNOPS representatives are expected to visit Aruba to present development plans for a completely new correctional facility, in light of the alarming state of deterioration of the current KIA prison in Santo di Patia.
During the visit, Minister Dowers met with Deputy Regional Director Giuseppe Mancinelli, Head of Programme William Gonzalez, and Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Dalila Gonçalves to discuss opportunities for future cooperation and sustainability in reconstruction and infrastructure projects.
