ORANJESTAD (AAN): The Milly Schwengle Sworn in as Aruba Minister Plenipotentiary marks an important step in strengthening Aruba’s official representation in the Netherlands and within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
On Wednesday afternoon, the official swearing-in ceremony took place at the Ceremonial House of the Governor of Aruba, where Governor Alfonso Boekhoudt administered the oath in the presence of the Council of Ministers of the AVP–Futuro cabinet. With this appointment, Aruba now once again has a formal representative in the Netherlands responsible for defending the island’s interests at the Kingdom level.
The Milly Schwengle Sworn in as Aruba Minister Plenipotentiary represents a strategic move by the government to strengthen Aruba’s diplomatic and political presence in Europe. The position of Minister Plenipotentiary plays a key role in representing Aruba within the Kingdom government structure and in maintaining close cooperation with the Dutch government and other Kingdom partners.
Mildred G.M. Schwengle, who holds a Master of Laws (LLM), is widely recognized as an experienced legal expert with extensive knowledge in constitutional law, international public law, governance, finance, and high-level negotiations. Her professional background includes both public and private sector leadership roles.
Schwengle studied Dutch law at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, now known as Radboud University Nijmegen, between 1984 and 1989. Her legal career began in the Public Prosecutor’s Office, where she served as acting Prosecutor General from 1990 to 1992. She later worked as a court clerk at the Court of First Instance of Aruba between 1992 and 1994.
In 1994, Schwengle began practicing law and became a partner at HBN Law, where she served from 1996 until 2017. During this time, she worked on legal matters involving Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, St. Maarten, and Saba.
Her career later expanded to the Kingdom level when she was appointed as a member of the Raad van State of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a prestigious advisory body that provides guidance on legislation, royal decrees, and international treaties. She held this position from 2017 to 2023, focusing particularly on legal and constitutional matters affecting relations within the Kingdom.
In addition to her institutional roles, Schwengle has been involved in several large financial and legal projects, including international acquisitions, pension fund privatizations, and complex negotiations involving significant financial interests.
Currently, she is also involved in negotiations related to sustainable public finance and financial supervision for the Government of Aruba within the Kingdom framework.
The Milly Schwengle Sworn in as Aruba Minister Plenipotentiary reflects the government’s confidence in her leadership, integrity, and legal expertise. Officials believe her experience in both government institutions and the private sector will strengthen Aruba’s voice within the Kingdom.
