Minister Gerlien Croes says the AVP-Futuro government put part of the national surplus directly into pensioners’ pockets on its very first night in office, approving an extra Afl. 250 reparatie toeslag (repair allowance) for pensioners that same night.
In an interview with DIARIO about the surplus, Croes said that on the first night of the new government, a budget was drafted and a portion of the surplus was allocated to pensioners, Diario reported on October 17.
Criticism of the previous government
Croes criticized the previous government for keeping the surplus ‘on paper’ without giving anything back to the people. She said these matters must be discussed openly, framing her remarks as looking forward rather than back.
Looking forward
The minister acknowledged that, due to years of lacking structural foundations, the country is currently lagging behind — a situation she says the government is now working to address.
