Fish Aggregating Device Installed in Aruba Waters

Minister Wendrick Cicilia was present on Sunday for the installation of the first Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) in Aruba waters, marking an important step to support local fishermen and promote sustainable fishing practices on the island.

The installation follows a commitment made by the Minister of Tourism, Transport and Labor during a meeting held in December 2025 with local fishermen and representatives from fishing organizations. During that meeting, several concerns and needs within the fishing sector were discussed, including the need to improve fishing opportunities closer to Aruba’s coast.

Supporting the Local Fishing Community

A Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) is a floating structure placed in the ocean to attract fish such as tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado). By creating a central point where fish naturally gather, the device helps fishermen locate fish more efficiently.

The first FAD was installed less than two miles from Aruba’s coast, making it easier and safer for local fishermen to reach productive fishing areas without traveling far offshore.

Minister Cicilia emphasized that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to supporting Aruba’s fishing community and recognizing the important role fishermen play in the island’s economy and culture.

Recognizing the Work of Fishermen

“Fishing requires dedication, knowledge, and courage,” Minister Cicilia stated. “As a government, we want to ensure that our fishermen have better tools and conditions to carry out their work.”

In addition to improving fishing opportunities, the FAD system also contributes to fishermen’s safety. By attracting fish closer to Aruba’s territorial waters, fishermen are less likely to travel far from shore, reducing potential risks at sea.

“Our goal is to stimulate fishing activities in Aruba while making them safer,” Cicilia added. “These devices give fishermen greater assurance that they can find fish without having to go too far into the ocean.”

More Devices Planned

The government plans to install a total of six Fish Aggregating Devices in Aruba’s waters. Sunday’s installation marks the first step in this initiative, which will continue in collaboration with local stakeholders and the fishing community.

Through initiatives like this, the government aims to strengthen the income opportunities of local fishermen while promoting the responsible and sustainable use of Aruba’s marine resources.
