Representatives from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) are in Aruba from today until December 5 to provide information to students, parents, and former students from the Dutch Caribbean about student financing and repayment of study loans.
Monique Hoogerwerf, DUO’s Caribbean Coordinator, emphasized in a recent interview with DIARIO the importance of being well-informed:
“We want every student to fully understand how the system works, what the requirements are, and how much they can receive or borrow. It is very important for them to realize that all loans must always be repaid with interest.”
During the visit, DUO organized several information sessions. The first two sessions focused on studying in the Netherlands, and registration for these sessions filled up quickly.
There was also a special session on loan repayment for former students who must begin repaying their loans next year. DUO representatives explained the various repayment options, such as reducing the monthly amount or paying through a local bank account in Aruba. According to Hoogerwerf, many students are unaware of the repayment options available, which often leads them to overpay or encounter repayment problems.
Hoogerwerf also highlighted that DUO has a temporary office for two weeks at the Directie Onderwijs Aruba (JFK building), where they will offer individual guidance. Universities and interested students will receive assistance in choosing their study programs in the Netherlands.
