Only Roadworthy Vehicles May Legally Operate on Aruba’s Roads

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba’s Department of Technical Inspections (DTI) is reminding motorists that only vehicles meeting the island’s legal and technical standards are permitted to operate on public roads.

According to Richella Dorothal of DTI, Article 9 of Aruba’s Road Traffic Ordinance requires every vehicle using public roads to comply with the technical requirements established under the Vehicle Regulations Decree.

Before a vehicle can be registered and legally driven, it must pass a technical inspection. DTI classifies vehicles into two main categories: motorcycles and motor vehicles. Motorcycles generally weigh less than 600 kilograms and do not have an enclosed body, while motor vehicles weigh more than 600 kilograms and are equipped with a body.

Dorothal explained that whenever a new type of vehicle enters Aruba, DTI evaluates it according to the legal criteria to determine its classification and verify compliance with all applicable technical standards.

If a vehicle does not meet the required legal or technical specifications, it cannot be approved for use on public roads. DTI also verifies that a vehicle’s registration plate matches its proper classification and informs the Tax Department (DIMP) whenever discrepancies are identified.

According to DTI, these inspections help ensure legal compliance while improving road safety for all users across Aruba.
