As part of the celebration of “International Volunteer Day,” the Centro di Bario Noord has honored Mrs. Maria Filomena “Mena” Tromp-Eckmeyer for nearly 50 years of unwavering dedication to the Noord community.
On December 5th, Aruba celebrated “Volunteer Day,” a moment devoted to acknowledging all who generously offer their time, energy, and talent to enrich the community. During this occasion, the Board of Centro di Bario Noord (CBN) took the opportunity to recognize an extraordinary figure: Mrs. Maria Filomena “Mena” Tromp-Eckmeyer, a remarkable volunteer whose impact spans almost five decades.
The recognition was presented during the “Let’s Act” event, organized in collaboration with CEDE Aruba, where CBN highlighted Mena’s lifelong commitment to uplifting generations of youth and seniors in Noord.
A Lifetime of Service
Born on October 26, 1943, Mrs. Mena Tromp-Eckmeyer is considered one of the pillars of community development in Noord. Her passion for helping others began in the 1970s when she founded Grupo Union Infantil, providing a safe and nurturing space for children to learn, grow, and socialize.
Serving All Generations
In 1988, Mena expanded her community service by creating Grupo Flor di Bini Bini, dedicated to seniors aged 60+. Through cultural, recreational, and social activities, she brought joy, purpose, and connection to elderly residents.
She also founded the Flor di Trinitaria dance group, where she taught traditional Aruban folkloric dance, helping preserve the island’s cultural heritage through performances representing Noord with pride.
Carnival, Culture, and Community
Mena played an active role in the Noord Carnival community for many years, helping organize groups and strengthen traditions. She also participated in the Social Assistance Committee of the Noord Catholic Parish, where she served the spiritual and social needs of families with compassion.
Leadership Roles
Her contributions extended beyond volunteer work and into formal community leadership:
- Board Member, Centro di Bario Noord (2005–2015)
- Board Member, Stichting Drecha Cas Aruba (since 1998), an organization assisting low-income families with home repairs and improvements.
These roles highlight her long-standing commitment to improving the well-being of families throughout Noord.
Recognitions and Awards
Throughout her life, Mena has received several distinguished honors:
- 1992 – Santa Anna Award, one of Aruba’s highest recognitions for volunteerism
- 2001 – Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau, a royal distinction for exceptional service to society
- 2025 – Special Recognition from CBN, presented during the Let’s Act event alongside CEDE Aruba, honoring her nearly 50 years of heartfelt community service
