Aruba’s ScubbleBubbles Foundation: The Student Divers Rescuing Coral Reefs

What happens when a passionate teacher merges marine science with youth energy? You get ScubbleBubbles, a grassroots team of student eco-divers led by Aruba International School’s own Nichole Danser—and they’re changing the future of coral reefs, one coral tree at a time.

🌊 Why Coral Reefs Matter

For over 10,000 years, coral reefs have served as vital ecosystems, home to thousands of marine species. They:

  • Provide habitat and food for fish, turtles, and more

  • Protect shorelines from storm surges and erosion

  • Support tourism and dive-based economies

But corals are in crisis.

Rising sea temperatures, pollution, and human activity are causing coral bleaching, where stressed corals expel algae, lose color, and face starvation. The result? Fragile ecosystems collapse, putting marine life—and humans—at risk.

👩‍🏫 Enter Nichole Danser and the ScubbleBubbles

Nichole Danser, a dedicated math teacher and avid diver, brought her passion for the sea to her students. With the help of Aqua Windies, she helped 10 students get PADI certified in 2016–2017.

The students had one big question: Why are some corals thriving while others are dying?

That question led them to action—and to the birth of ScubbleBubbles, Aruba’s student-driven coral restoration project.

🌱 Planting Hope: How Coral Restoration Works

With support from De Palm Island, the team created coral trees—PVC structures anchored in the sea where coral fragments from healthy reefs are nurtured in low-stress environments. These structures mimic underwater gardens, giving coral time to grow stronger before being replanted on Aruba’s natural reef systems.

It’s like growing underwater plants—with lots of bubbles.

🤝 Powered by Community Support

ScubbleBubbles’ success has been made possible by the Aruban community, with sponsors like:

  • De Palm Island

  • Jolly Pirates

  • Aruba Aloe (sponsoring a second coral nursery)

  • Countless local businesses and volunteers

Scientific partners from the Reef Rescue Network and visiting marine biologists have also taken notice, helping guide the project’s scientific impact.

🌟 Growing Bigger, Diving Deeper

Since its humble beginnings, the ScubbleBubbles team has tripled in size, inspiring youth across the island to join. Recently, they celebrated a huge milestone: transplanting their first nursery-grown coral back onto the reef—a hopeful sign for the future of Aruba’s marine life.

Their story is now catching the attention of global marine science leaders.

💙 How You Can Help

Want to support the ScubbleBubbles?

✅ Donate to help fund new coral nurseries and supplies
✅ Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine ecosystems
✅ Spread the word about coral conservation
✅ Volunteer or sponsor if you’re based in Aruba

🌍 The Ocean Has Always Protected Us—Now It’s Our Turn

The ocean has sustained life on Earth since the beginning. Thanks to projects like ScubbleBubbles, a new generation is learning how to give back.
