Recently, Wilyenie Croes, a fourth-year Social Work student at the University of Aruba, officially completed her studies by presenting her graduation thesis at Plan di Mayor.

Her thesis focuses on children affected by the separation of their parents and how to support them during this challenging time. Through her research, Wilyenie has contributed to the efforts aimed at improving the well-being of children in these situations.

Several key figures in child welfare and separation policy attended the event. Among them were Mrs. Aisca Berkemeyer, Director of the Voogdijraad and Treasurer of the Continued Parenting Commission, and Mr. Bert Wielenga, Secretary of the same commission. Thalina Willems, mediator at Plan di Mayor, was also present. Online attendees included Mrs. Sacha Geerman, Policy Officer at the Department of Social Affairs and Taskforce member for Children’s Rights, and Xavier Simileer, Legal Policy Officer for Human Rights at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Wilyenie completed her internship at Plan di Mayor under the guidance of her coach, Michella Steenvoorde-Laclé, who is the coordinator of Plan di Mayor and president of the Continued Parenting Commission.

“Wilyenie showed great professionalism, dedication, empathy, and critical thinking during her internship,” said Steenvoorde-Laclé. “Her thesis per

fectly aligns with our mission to put children at the center when dealing with parental separation.”

Wilyenie’s research focused on how children experience the separation of their parents and what support they need during the process. The results show that children involved in agreements through Plan di Mayor often display more emotional balance and share coherent stories about their experiences. They were better able to reflect on both parents without taking sides and felt more emotionally secure.

With her diploma now in hand, Wilyenie Croes is ready to begin her journey as a new professional contributing to a more caring society. Plan di Mayor congratulates her on this outstanding achievement.
