An Aruba prosecutor has requested a five-year prison sentence for a 46-year-old man accused of attempted murder after stabbing his former partner three times in February.
Prosecution presents attempted-murder case
EA News reported that the defendant admitted the stabbing, while the court reviewed evidence concerning two wounds to the victim’s neck and one to the abdomen. The woman required emergency abdominal surgery after the February 11 incident.
The prosecution argued that the location and nature of the wounds showed that the defendant accepted a potentially fatal risk. A psychiatric assessment found him legally responsible, according to the court report.
Defense seeks a shorter sentence
The defense asked the judge to consider the defendant’s remorse, lack of a previous record and the victim’s request for leniency. The Aruba stabbing case was previously postponed for psychiatric evaluation, making the sentencing request a material new development.
The judge has not yet imposed a sentence. A verdict is scheduled for September 18.
