Aruba tourism pressure has prompted the MEP parliamentary faction to request an urgent meeting of Parliament’s Permanent Committee on Tourism.
According to reporting by NoticiaCla, faction leader Evelyn Wever-Croes wants lawmakers and tourism organizations to discuss the sector’s current condition and growing concern about overtourism.
Growth is affecting infrastructure and daily life
Wever-Croes said tourism remains essential to Aruba’s economy, but continued growth is placing increasing pressure on infrastructure, traffic, public space, nature, waste management and residents’ quality of life.
MEP argues that the discussion should move beyond how many visitors Aruba can attract and consider which tourism model the island can sustain over the long term.
Tourism organizations would be invited to Parliament
The faction asked Parliament to invite the Aruba Tourism Authority, Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association and Aruba Timeshare Association. The proposed discussion would address Aruba’s capacity, the state of the tourism sector and the conditions needed for more sustainable growth.
MEP supports a “High Value, Low Impact” model intended to produce more economic and social value while reducing pressure on the island’s limited space, infrastructure and natural environment.
Meeting would focus on decisions, not blame
Wever-Croes said the purpose is not to assign blame. She wants Parliament and tourism stakeholders to identify practical limits and the decisions required to keep tourism a source of prosperity without allowing growth to erode residents’ quality of life.
